Monday

Hi all
French Immersion Classes who come to me for English (Boisjoly's and Francis' classes)
Unfortunately, today has been a day where I spent a considerable amount ot time discussing the following:
1. the need and importance of coming to class prepared. Too many students come to class without pencils, pens, books, binders, assignments and the first 15 minutes of class means they are running back to their lockers for this, that and whatever else. No more. As of tomorrow, there will be no more leaving the class. Too much time is wasted and by the time you reach December of your Grade 7 year, you should be fully aware of what is needed for each class.
2. that some students are woefully behind in handing in assignments. You know who you are; I  nagged you relentlessly in class this afternoon. You have until the end of next week to get all of your overdue assignments in to me. If they are not into me by that time, you will receive a mark of 0 for that assignment.
3. that some students are still unaware of how to hand in an assignment. You need your name, date, assignment number, novel, chapter and page numbers on each assignment. We learn elements of this in the primary years. You are heading off to high school. More care is needed with your assignments.

Tuesday (tomorrow), I will give the grade 7/8 FI classes a "catch-up" period to work on your final assignment for your novel or to work on an assignment that is past due.

High School Selection
You are probably aware by now that Victoria Park IB and SATEC entrance tests are on the same day. If you have a time that conflicts, you are being advised to contact Victoria Park and they will give you an alternate date/time. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are difficulties arranging times and I will speak to our Guidance Counsellor.

Food Drive
Notices have gone home regarding our Clairlea Food Drive. Please bring in a non-perishable food item for our food drive (peas, beans, rice, cooking oil, baby food, soup, pasta).

See you all tomorrow.

Overdue Post

It was such a pleasure to talk with so many of you again for Parent/Teacher interviews. I have sent emails to guidance, and hopefully, I have responded to all of your requests. Please let me know what questions you have regarding high school selection, what you need (essays revised, time/review for entrance exams, and so forth) and I will do some digging for you or point you to the right person. Now that November is ending, I believe most of the High School open houses have happened. There were a number of last minute date and time changes - and some entrance exams have been rescheduled - please  check your chosen High School websites daily. Talk to me, if in doubt, and I can help.

As you are all aware, with our new rotary system, I do not teach Math and Language to all the kids in my homeroom. Some I see for both, many I see for just Language. Please remember to check Mme Francis' blog for Geography updates, the agendas for Mr Knierim's, Mme Boisjoly's, Ms Gousis' updates for Science, Math and French. If in doubt, contact me and I will find out what you need to know.

Math
We had our second Data Mgmt quiz this week. Check with your kids for the marks for the first quiz or contact me. We start Geometry next week.
Language
1. We are working on issues in the First Nation's reserve in Attawapiskat. We started this unit last year and we are doing a follow-up unit this year, writing letters, forming opinions and developing a greater understanding of the federal government's role in First Nation's issues. Hopefully, kids will begin to see that there is not a great deal of information about First Nation's issues readily at hand and their own inquiry and research is important in unearthing relevant information.
2. We are also starting on the writing form, Explanation.
3. We are continually working on a variety of strategies to help construct meaning.
4. Lit circles are still underway and will be wrapping up in the next couple of weeks. Many kids have requested we do another novel study and they all have novels of their own choosing. At the elementary level, we prefer not to have kids use their own novels as there is so much explicit teaching required. This is preferable to do in a group setting where kids can construct meaning together. Let me think on whether I'll do individual novels or not.

Housekeeping
1. Foodbank flyers went home last week and the drive begins this week. Like last year's Christmas drive, we are working with Birchmount Community Centre and will, hopefully, get over there to help pack boxes. Items required: Rice, oils, pasta, baby food, crackers, dish detergent, soap, beans, soup - all non-perishables. As always, thank you for your support.
2. Guidance - let me know what questions you have, what you need, how I can help.
3. Pizza lunch is November 28.

Here's a class picture from yesterday. A birthday celebration was underway! Many thanks to all of the Intermediates for making my day so much fun!

Have a great Grey Cup weekend!

Wednesday

Apologies for not posting as often this week. My mac has been in the repair shop. How did we become so computer-dependant??

Homework
1. Thursday there will be a integers quiz - adding, subtracting and multiplying only. We have worked on strategy sheets this week and practice worksheets. I have done some quick oral quizzes and we appear to be on the right track. Please review adding, subtracting and multiplying tonight. The most difficult word problems will be a separate quiz. I want to ensure you know the basic skills first.
2. Novels will be given out this week for Literature Circles.

Housekeeping

2. IEPs have gone home (there is one exception). Please check your child's backpack. Please sign the page as indicated and return for the OSR. Success Criteria for Personal Narratives
I know I have handed in a fantastic personal narratve when my writing:
* leaves the reader with something to think about;
* shares one life changing experience;
* shows emotion that you can truly feel;
* is in the past tense and first person;
* shows paragraphs that are properly formated with a topic sentence and supporting sentences. My paragraphs transition well.

See you all Thursday.

Tuesday, October 9

Hi all
And where, exactly, did that long weekend go?

Math
Integer homework. Q. 19 and 20(d) for tomorrow. For those of you who worked ahead, please work on the Review Page, Q 1- 7.

Ms Sneyd, Guidance Counsellor, will be in school tomorrow to give a presentation to the Grade 8s about choices for High School.

Novel Study
Tonight, I ordered novels from Scholastic. They should be arriving this week and then we will begin working on Literature Circles.

Housekeeping
1. Terry Fox money is due tomorrow. After our chat this morning, please ensure that you contribute a minimum of $2 from your own personal pocket for the Terry Fox Foundation. You are all of the age that fully comprehends the importance of giving generously to others. Cancer unfortunately will or has affect(ed) you or someone in your family. Money is needed for research if we are to continually move ahead in combating this disease. Speak to your families about the importance of giving generously to cancer research. Think of Terry Fox, his personal goal and the sacrifice he made for cancer research.
2. Inclement Weather Form has gone home for your parents/guardians to sign and to send back for your office files. Should the weather dictate that we close the school, you will be unable to leave school until the required time should this form not be returned. Please ensure that it is brought back to class asap.

See you all tomorrow.
Ms V.

Friday, September 28th

Hi all
Homework
Integer Review - due Monday.

Effective Monday - For those of you who have not completed your homework, you will be required to stay after school to finish it. That includes those of you who have the following excuses: I lost it; my mom threw it out; I forgot it; I didn't have time to do it; I spilled something on it and it's in the garbage; I left it on the radiator and it just vanished; It was in the pile of stuff on the dining room table and who knows where it is now; I can't stay behind because my mom says so; I have a hockey game; I have a baseball game; I just can't.

Really? I've heard it all. You are in Grade 8. You will be getting a lot more homework once you are in High School. Now's the time to develop those solid work habits. If YOU are unable to develop solid work habits, let me HELP you - the not-so-pleasant way.

Here's what's due:
1. Math (due Monday)
2. Personal Narrative Organizer (due last Thursday)
3. History (Mme Francis - due ?)

Housekeeping
1. IEP Parent Consult Letters went home today. Please check your child's backpack.
2. Picture day is on Tuesday. Please ensure you have indicated a pose on the picture form. Bring your form in on Tuesday.
3. Girls' Softball. Practice is on Tuesday a.m. and there is a game after school. Also a game after school on Wednesday.

Great participation for the Terry Fox Run. Thanks to Nicolas, Ayden and Thomas for the music. Here are some pictures.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday, September 12th

Hi all

Homework
Math practice sheet. I will collect these in tomorrow morning.

I was pleased with the number of students who completed their homework. Yes, some of those questions were a little challenging, but I'm always happy when you try and then are able to articulate where the challenge was.

Guidance and High School Process
Ms Sandra Sneyd, our Guidance Counsellor, was at Clairlea this morning to introduce herself to our Grade 8s.

Here's what we have learned about the High School process.

1. Letters will be handed out to parents on Curriculum Night (September 20th) about High School information.
2. A second letter will go home mid-October inviting all parents and students to High School Information Night in early November.
3. High School Information night should be attended by all parents.
4. High Schools will begin having open houses for you to view their programs beginning in November.

I would strongly encourage you to visit a number of school websites. It is early in the year, but their websites may have information regarding speciality programs for you to read about.

Wexford Collegiate School of Performance Arts
Birchmount Collegiate (BEEP program)
International Baccalaureate Programs at: Victoria Park High School, Wilfred Laurier (in the Guildwood  area), Monarch Park
SATEC has some speciality programs within the school
TOPS program at Marc Garneau
Leadership Program at R.H. King

Again, we are way ahead of the game. Letters and brochures will be coming home to you very soon regarding the process for optional attendance and high school applications. We will have an open house at Clairlea to help introduce to the process and field the many questions you will have.

* All is good in the homeroom classroom.
* Rotary appears to be going very well. The student feedback is very positive: switching classrooms and teachers for speciality subjects makes the day a lot more interesting.
* Yes, we are short on lockers which means some students need to share. Not ideal, but this is the reality that we are faced with. Thanks for everyone's cooperation.

Housekeeping
* TTC will be at Clairlea on September 26th to take pictures for the Student Fare Photo Identification Card. The cost is $5.25 and students will be issued with a laminated student card. This card is recommended for all students who are or will be turning 13 this academic year. A good idea, please, as we tend to use the TTC fairly often throughout the school year.
* HPV permission forms are still outstanding (girls vaccine only). Even if you do not wish your daughter to have this shot, the permission form should be returned with No indicated. Thank you.
* Pizza lunch forms have gone home.
* Some agenda money and brown envelopes are still outstanding. Please and thank you.

Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding questions. I can be reached via the agenda or by calling the office at 416 396 6165.

Thanks!
Ms Vincent

Team-building Kind of Day

This afternoon, we pulled all four Intermediate classes together and spent most of the (hot!) afternoon outside. We divided all the kids up into 6 teams and played soccer/baseball and soccer at Edge Park and in our playground. Hot, smelly, sweaty and tired. That was the order of the day.

Reminder
1. Thanks to all who have returned brown envelopes and agenda money. Still a few outstanding. ASAP, please.
2. Lots more paperwork to come home: TTC passes and HPV vaccination for Grade 8 girls - paperwork to be sent home this week.
3. Please remember to bring your running shoes to school EVERY DAY.

See you tomorrow.
Ms. V.

First Day of School

Our Grade 8 class, first day of school.

Welcome back to everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful summer! I am so very pleased to be teaching this wonderful group of students again, this year. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Abilaash who joined our Grade 8 class this morning. We now have 36 high-energy, enthusiastic students!

This year, we have introduced "rotary" to our Intermediate grades. As I am still tweaking the timetable, I will have it available tomorrow. Here is a general breakdown of teaching responsibilities:

Ms Vincent - Grade 8 English homeroom teacher, Grade 8 Math and Grade 7 and 8 Language
Mr Knierim - Grade 7 and 8 Science
Mme Francis - Grade 7 and 8 History (1st term) and Geography (2nd term)
Mme Boisjoy - Grade 8 Core French and Grade 8 Health
Mr Church - Phys. Ed.
Mme Demeter - Visual Art
Ms Park - Dance and Drama

Requests
1. Please read/sign/return forms in the brown Clairlea Public School envelope. It is important that these are returned to the office as soon as possible.
2. Agendas have been handed out. Cost is $6.
3. Regarding school materials: USB; 1 binder with subject dividers to keep papers, assignments organized, pencils, and the usual makers, pencil crayons, etc.
4. Please have a chat with your student about the importance of staying organized, this year, as we work on a "rotary" schedule. It is important that they stay on top of assignments, build positive relationships with their teachers and peers. This rotary experience is excellent practice for the realities that await high school, next year.

As always, I can be reached via email, carol.vincent@tdsb.on.ca; phone: 416 396 6165; and through messages in the agenda. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I'm happy to meet with you. Please make an appointment first.

Please check this blogspot regularly for information and news.

Looking forward to a fantastic Grade 8 year.

Ms. Vincent
