Graduation Update

Wow! So all the information has gone home, we have talked about EVERYTHING a humdred times - let's just make sure everyone is ok.

Grade 8 Grad is at 140 Borough Drive in the Rotunda

Schedule for the Ceremony and Festivities
3 pm - Grads begin arriving and there will be individual pictures by parent council.
4 pm - Grad ceremony
5:15 pm - Small reception at 140 Borough Drive
5:45 pm  - Bus departs for Cruise
6:30 pm -  Cruise: Dinner and Dance
9:30 pm - Bus back to Clairlea
10:15 pm - Return to Clairlea, pick up grad photos and goodbye

Parents are responsible for bringing their son/daughter to the grad ceremony.

_______________________________

Please be sure you let the office know if your son/daughter will be coming to school on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.  Traditionally, Grade 8 students do not return to school after graduation - they have graduated, they have their report cards ... but we need to know one way or another. Please ensure that you let us know (by the form that was sent home or a phone call to the office) - we need to ensure that we have attendance completed correctly.

______________________

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions - there was LOTS of paperwork that went home in the last month and I know it's hard to keep it all straight!

Keep calm! We're almost at grad and the kids are soooo excited!

Wahanowin

A number of phonecalls have come into the office regarding Wahanowin.

On Monday - regular 8:30 drop off time.  All bags, etc will be dropped off in the Gym. All students go to their homeroom classes for attendance and then the bus is loaded. We leave Clairlea around 9:45 am.  We will be in Wahanowin in time for lunch.

Pick-up on Friday - see the schedule in your package. We are scheduled to leave Wahanowin at 1 pm. We will be back at Clairlea around 2 - 2:30 depending on traffic. Pick up time is around that time or the usual bell time of 3:15. As we are travelling home, we will contact the school to let them know about our expected arrival time.

Packing List - see the list in your package. Please remember that this is an outdoor activity week. Clothes that you choose to bring must allow you to zip line, run, jump, climb, play sports, etc. There is no fashion show. We are not going to New York. This is not Fashion Week.

Sleeping Gear - this is not a 5-star hotel. Sleeping bag, sheet and pillow. Wear pjs. It was 2 degrees, today in Orillia, not factoring in wind chill.

You will meet all weather, warm, cold, sun and rain. Bring appropriate gear to be outside. Bring mittens and a hat for night time bonfires. Bring a bathing suit should the weather be warm enough. Bring your tornado survival gear - you just never know, these days. Sweats, shorts and teeshirts, jackets and jeans, warm woollen socks, jackets - dress in layers ...

Warm and dry feet - bring extra running shoes, water boots if you have them.

Do not bring snacks. Do not bring snacks Do not bring snacks. Wahanowin has TOLD US that due to strict allergy regulations and safeguards, we do not bring food into the facility. Bring money for the tuck shop if you need to have a snack.

The comments section of this blog is open. If you have any concerns, please feel free to comment and I will reply.

Stay Calm and Think Wahanowin.

See you Monday!

Hi all
1. Congrats to the girls' soccer team for winning yesterday's tournament! It was great to be able to spend time outside watching it all unfold. Excellent job, girls!

2. Wahanowin is fast approaching and I know you are all PUMPED! Let me know if you have any questions. We are very much looking forward to our week away! Any outstanding money should be brought in as soon as possible. Thank you to those of you who have paid!

3. Clairlea's Eco Team is raising money for more plants for our gardens and eco initiatives around the school. Please see the school flyer for details.

What can you do?

  • Donate books that you no longer need. There is a bin in the foyer where you can drop off children, teen and adult books. Drop them off and then buy some for yourself on the day of the sale.
  • There will also be a plant sale. Details to follow.
Have a great day at school!

Backpacks and cellphones are not permitted.

Enjoy this beautiful day - see you tomorrow.

Hi all

Math Homework
Q. 1-9 of the Practice Test, p. 176

Please note: Ratios, Percentages and Sales Commissions are, most likely, concepts which you are not familiar with in real life. Sales Commission, PST and GST are not covered in Grade 7 Math. You will need to practice and re-practice the questions that we have covered in class.

Take home your Math text books and review what we have been doing. Math test is on Monday. Do not leave all of your reviewing to Sunday night! Come to class with any questions that you may have.

Chocolate Sales
Quite a few of you owe money for chocolate sales. Please note that tomorrow is the due date for outstanding money. I have spoken with each of you and there should be a note in the agenda for your parents. Please and thank you!

Novels - You have all chosen fabulous novels to read for this term. I think I will be reading a couple of them over the summer! Please remember to bring your novels to class.

A variety of permission forms have gone home for various things! Please ensure that they are returned on time.

Monday, February 11, 2013

Hi all
We have a very busy week ahead.

Monday - Report cards have gone home today. Inside you will find an interview schedule for myself, Ms Gousis, Mme Boisjoly and Ms Wright. For my homeroom class, if you requested an interview time, your name has been slotted into a time. Interviews are in 10 minute intervals due to the number of interviews that need to happen. Interviews will happen in the gym.

If you did not request an interview but feel you need one, please feel free to add your name to a free time slot and send the form back to me. I will try my best to accommodate your requested time. I will send back a confirmation to you. If you are unable to attend an in-person interview, please note that we can discuss your child's progress during a phone interview. Please let me know.

Tuesday - Our Guidance Counsellor, Ms Sneyd, will be here to do a demo/walk through of My Blue Print - course selection and details regarding High School. I have never completed one of these before and this is strictly a set up and demo for all to see.  Periods 3 and 4 in the computer lab.

Wednesday - HPV shots for the Grade 8 girls.

Thursday - Valentine's Day Dance - more details to follow. Parent/Teacher interviews in the evening.

Friday - Parent/Teacher Interviews for the teachers. Students have the day off.

Next Monday is Family Day. There is no school.

A couple of things:
1. Information Writing is in progress. Your work, books, rough drafts must come to school with you. This is not an at-home assignment although some aspects of it will be homework.

2. Use of Cell Phones. I have caught too many of you texting during class time. This is completely unacceptable. Cell phones are not allowed in class. If you bring one to class, prepare to have it taken away from you. There is no mercy rule for this. You are in Grade 8 and you are fully aware of the rules and regulations around cell phone use. They are not to be used as calculators during Math class. End of story.

See you all tomorrow.
Ms. V.

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Hi all
I'm delighted to hear that many of you have been accepted into SATEC Speciality Programs, Victoria Park IB, Wexford Performance and Visual, Birchmount BEAP and RH King Leadership/Culture programs.

Congratulations to all of you who took the time and initiative to apply to programs and we are so happy for those of you who have received acceptance letters so far. I know that many more letters are in the process of being mailed out.

To those of you who were not accepted, please remember this.
1) these programs have limited enrolment and not everyone can be accepted. Students are applying from all over the GTA for the very limited number of spaces.
2) You are all talented and wonderful. Within your own schools, there will be many opportunities for you to grow academcially and emotionally - those opportunities are not extended to only those who have been accepted to speciality programs. Please remember you have a very rich and rewarding high school experience ahead of you. Be all you can be in the school where you are at.
3) There are many, many opportunities both inside and outside of school for you to grow in any area you are interested. Look far and wide: your community centre, your places of worship, teams and clubs. Volunteer, enrol, participate. Your whole life awaits you.

And remember most of all. You cannot possibly succeed if you don't try. You will not meet with success at every door you knock on. But never, ever be afraid to try.

Ms V.

All Intermediate teachers will be conducting interviews in the gym on Thursday evening and Friday morning. Please check off which teachers you wish to see. Because there are over 100 students in the Intermediate division, interview are restricted to 10 mins per family.

Please fill out the form and return by Thursday of this week so we may schedule times.

Thanks
Ms V.

Course Selection Forms

Hi all
Couse selections forms and booklets went home yesterday with each student.

1. For students who have applied to specialized programs, you should hear back from that school by February 14th. If you do not hear back by that date, please call the school.
2. Course Selections Sheets are due into me by February 19th at the very latest.
3. Students with their parent(s)/legal guardian(s) are responsible for completing the Course Selection Sheet. Teachers are not permitted to fill these forms out but we are allowed to advise. For example, if you are unsure whether you should be in academic or applied, we may advise you but ultimately the decision rests with you and you parent(s)/guardian(s).
4. Our guidance counsellor gave a profile of students who should register in the "academic" stream: students who can work independently, sit quietly, take notes ... Please note that, in my professional opinion, this profile is incorrect. Students who are kinesthetic learners, students who may be ADD or ADHD, students who like to talk and share ideas, students who feel the need to move around a classroom - are also well suited to the academic stream in a high school.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi all
Just a reminder that we will be walking to Metro and No Frills tomorrow to buy food for our lunch that we will be making on Friday. Permission forms are not required as they were covered off with our "walking excursion" forms that were filled out in the September package.

Please dress for the weather.

See you all tomorrow.

Monday, January 7, 2013

Hi all
Welcome back! I hope you all had a good break and spent some time relaxing with family and friends. As well, thank you all for your very kind and thoughtful gifts. I was suitably spoiled and enjoyed sharing everything with my family over the holidays! Thank you!

We are in the midst of preparing report cards for Term 1. There are some of you who still need to hand in assignments from last year and I will be speaking with each of you about this. Last year, I wrote notes in agendas with instructions that parent(s) were to sign and return to me. The next step is for me to start calling home. Please do not have me resort to this. Your assignments are due immediately.

For those of you have me for Math - there will be a Math Quiz on translations and reflections on Wednesday. Please review your notes and come to class prepared.

See you all tomorrow.
